For those who think that concern about the volume of automotive engine noise is a recent development, they are mistaken. The first known patent for a muffler in history was already registered in 1897 in the United States, with authorship shared between Milton O. Reeves and Marshall T. Reeves.

The brothers, who were partners in the Reeves Pulley Company based in the city of Columbia, described their invention as a “new and useful improvement for automotive exhaust silencers.”

The concept of this new technology was to add a device to the exhaust system of vehicles of that era, capable of expanding and cooling the combustion product to reduce the expulsion pressure into the atmosphere, thus reducing noise.

Many years passed between this audacious invention and the refinement and sophistication of this revolutionary automotive solution. More than a century later, Tuper, the largest exhaust manufacturer in Latin America and a market leader, has in its catalog over a thousand items including traditional and universal mufflers, catalytic converters, and tips.
