June is a month dedicated, especially, to the environment, as June 1st marks the beginning of Environmental Week, and National Environmental Education Day (June 3rd) and World Environment Day and Ecology Day (June 5th) are celebrated. For Tuper, one of the largest steel processors in Latin America, with a production capacity of over eight hundred thousand tons of steel per year, sustainability and environmental responsibility are points of utmost attention.

The establishment of a corporate environmental culture is continuously nurtured by actions promoting environmental education for both employees and the community. These measures include the replacement of industrial park lighting with a more sustainable option, the promotion of selective waste collection, the adoption of best environmental management practices, the delivery of Daily Dialogues on Safety, Environment, and Health (DDSMS) to employees addressing relevant environmental topics, among others.

The company has been ISO 14001 certified since 2004, uses 100% of its consumed energy from clean sources acquired through the open energy market, manages greenhouse gas emissions, is classified as a zero landfill company, maintains a cistern with a capacity of 750,000 liters of rainwater since 2005 for use in production processes, and has had an effluent treatment plant since 2006. It has implemented programs to monitor air quality, atmospheric emissions, soil, and groundwater, both internally and externally, and has implemented internal and external environmental education programs.

Learn about some of Tuper’s actions and projects focused on socio-environmental development:

Carbon Management
This project aims to promote a corporate culture of measuring, reporting, and voluntary management of greenhouse gas emissions (GEE). The project involves the development and publication of an emissions inventory (diagnostic phase), the definition of goals, and the implementation of actions to reduce emissions and engage in compensation activities. The goal is to become a carbon-neutral company.

Zero Landfill
The project began in January 2022 with the development of various initiatives to reduce waste generation and eliminate disposal in industrial landfills, seeking new alternatives for treatment and reuse. In May 2022, the company achieved zero landfill status.

Tuper Attitudes Program
This program aims to propagate a culture of sustainable attitudes in the corporate environment by using each employee as a multiplier through the promotion of internal actions to provoke a sense of belonging that leads to a change in attitude. Each employee becomes a protagonist of the project through daily actions.

Distribution of Tree Seedlings
In September, in celebration of Tree Day, the company distributes tree seedlings to employees and the community. The initiative also involves the collection of plastic bottle caps, which are exchanged for the seedlings and later donated to a municipal social project aimed at funding the spaying/neutering of stray animals.

Eco Point
In front of the Brasília neighborhood unit in São Bento do Sul, the company has provided the community with an eco point for the collection of electronic waste for subsequent recycling. The collected materials are donated to a local cooperative to support the income of cooperative families.

Tuper Ecological Challenge
The first edition of the Ecological Challenge, marking the 2021 Environmental Week, was held virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Using a mobile application, participants completed routes through various ecosystems individually using bicycles. Non-perishable food collection and distribution of gifts made from recyclable materials were also carried out.

Recycling for Animal Feed
Incentive actions for the proper disposal of waste at industrial units have made it possible to convert eleven tons of recyclable materials into more than one ton of animal feed for donation to local entities that shelter rescued animals.

Internal Campaign “What Do I Do for the Planet’s Future?”
The project aims to encourage employees to send suggestions and tips for sustainable actions to be shared with others, in order to multiply everyday actions so that the results can be maximized.

Tuper also participates in incentive actions, such as supporting the planting of thousands of native trees, donating a 40,000 square meter area of Atlantic Forest preservation and applied studies, supporting the creation of the Quiriri Intermunicipal Consortium (1995) and the CEPA – Rugendas (Center for Environmental Studies and Research) in 2000, as well as actions for the maintenance, protection, and monitoring of fauna and flora in protected areas. The company believes that responsible management and environmental education will bring benefits and inspiration for future generations to maintain this legacy.
